JULES logo

JULES From Scratch is an alternative how-to for those who don't work on a system where Cylc, Rose, etc., have already been installed and/or can't use the Met Office Virtual Machine (e.g. for security reasons). I (Toby Marthews) wrote the first version of it in 2017. I'm also assuming little or no familiarity with any recent version of JULES.

I am hoping to upload a revised version of JULES From Scratch fairly soon, but until then please DO NOT FOLLOW THIS TUTORIAL. Unfortunately, because of the migration of JASMIN to Lotus2 and upgrade to Rose2 and Cylc8 during February 2025 (see here and here) and the retirement of Cylc7 and Python2 more generally (which applies to all servers), large parts of my JULES From Scratch tutorial no longer work and you cannot run JULES on JASMIN using these steps any more.

I'm leaving the 2023 version of this tutorial here to download for those still using Cylc7/Python2 systems (or for reference). If that is not sufficient, please consult alternative training resources, e.g. here., or access the UK Met Office documentation on JULES here.

The best timescale I can give at the moment (Sep 2025) for replacing JULES From Scratch is early 2027, because that is the (current) best guess for when the UK Met Office migration from Subversion/TRAC to Git will have been completed (see here).
